ADVANCED TT MODULE GUIDE
Module 1 - Yoga Philosophy
Our Philosophy module delves into the earliest oral traditions, centered around a profound dialogue between the first Yogi, Shiva, and his wife, Parvati, the original Yoga student.
We also explore alternative philosophical perspectives, examining the Bhagavad Gita, the lesser-known Ashtavakra Gita, and reflecting on the Yoga Sutras. How has your understanding evolved since your first teacher training?
Module 2 - Anatomy
A simplified approach to anatomy, where Zahir takes pride in making science and biomechanics as accessible as possible.
This module focuses on understanding the reasons behind our movements and how they occur, rather than simply memorizing the names of muscles and ligaments.
As A.T. Still once said, "Anatomy is first, last, and everything.
Module 3 - Physiology
Anatomy is about movement, and physiology is the force that drives that movement.
In this, Zahir's favorite module, we explore what physiology is and how it influences everything we do, leading to an organic understanding that each student, as they sit on their mat, is a reflection of their unique physiology.
Module 4 - Stress
A common misconception is that stress is inherently bad, yet it’s one of the most defining features of our species. So why does stress have such a negative reputation? How does it manifest and impact our yoga practice? And, most importantly, do you know why zebras don’t get ulcers?
This thought-provoking module explores the nuances of stress and promises to be one of the most enlightening experiences of the course.
Module 5 - The Science of Breathing
In this module, we apply our physiology and stress knowledge to explore the most efficient ways to breathe and how proper breathing in yoga can promote healing down to the cellular level.
We examine questions such as: What is the most efficient way to breathe during practice? And does breathing change when transitioning from sitting to standing?
Module 6 - Back Pain in Yoga
Recommendations for back pain in yoga often worsen the discomfort because back pain is complex and highly individual.
In this module, we explore how to assess different types of back pain, discover which poses work best for specific conditions, and empower both ourselves and our students with tailored, effective approaches.
Module 7 - Injuries
Gain a deeper understanding of why injuries occur (the balance between demand and tolerance) and the crucial role of nutrition and sleep in the recovery process.
We’ll also examine the data on yoga-related injuries, identify the most common types, and learn how to support students in avoiding these frequent mistakes.
Module 8 - Anatomy Trains
Explore an alternative approach to viewing the body and movement. Instead of seeing the body as separate anatomical parts, we’ll look at how everything is intricately connected.
We’ll discuss how yoga poses can help engage and work with these fascial lines to promote holistic movement and well-being.
Module 9 - Yin Yoga
Through an in-depth exploration of Yin Yoga philosophy, you will gain the skills to become a certified Yin Yoga teacher.
You’ll learn about the Tattvas, dive deep into the anatomy, and gain a better understanding of the concepts of stillness and surrender—which are often far different from what we imagine.
Module 10 - The Origins of Yoga
Our second philosophy module takes you back 15,000 years to the era of the Adi Yogi, the first yogi, Shiva. We explore the significance of yoga from that ancient time, how it contrasts with today’s modern postural yoga, and why the wisdom of ancient yoga remains profoundly relevant and life-changing.
Module 11 - 84 Asanas
Dive into the rich history of yoga poses and explore the origins of the 84 classical asanas, drawing insights from both mythology and academic research.
We’ll examine some of the most traditional yoga poses and trace how they have evolved over the years.
Is yoga one of the most dynamic and ever-evolving cultural practices?
Module 12 - Advanced Poses
Led by Laura Akram, with assistance from Senior Teacher Paul Allen, this module will guide you through modern advanced yoga poses.
These engaging afternoon sessions are workshop-based and full of fun, fostering a supportive and explorative environment.
Module 13 - Partner Yoga
The most playful and lighthearted module of all! In this afternoon session, we pair up and enjoy some partner yoga.
Our philosophy emphasizes embracing a childlike, joyful approach to yoga and life, reminding us to laugh at ourselves.
Check out the video from our last session at Paul Allen’s house!
Module 14 - Trauma
We aim to understand trauma, not to claim the title of “trauma-informed” teachers.
This module explores how trauma develops and its long-term impact on our lives. It’s designed to help us realize that everyone is fighting their own battles, and that true understanding almost always leads to compassion.
Module 15 - Special Populations
Using available science and data, we learn how to modify and adapt yoga poses (and entire classes) to be inclusive for all.
This data-driven module equips you with the confidence to teach anyone, regardless of background, injury, age, or other considerations, ensuring yoga is accessible to everyone.
Module 16 - Advanced Sequencing
In this module, we explore various ways to design and sequence yoga classes, drawing from the collective years of practice and expertise of the three tutors: Paul, Laura, and Zahir. Each tutor brings a unique approach to teaching and sequencing, offering you, the student, a more well-rounded and flexible method for creating your classes.
Module 17 - The Poses
This module ties everything together and runs throughout the entire course. We work on integrating your newfound understanding of anatomy, physiology, and, most importantly, breathing into your practice.
By the end, you’ll have a completely fresh perspective on your yoga practice, teaching approach, and even your view of your body and life as a whole.
*Online Learning
Remember, each module can also be studied at your own pace using our online platform. You’ll have access to all the course content, including module videos, quizzes, and resources to help consolidate your learning.
Access will be available from the start of the course, providing you with the flexibility to learn on your schedule.
Module 18 - Exploring Krishna's Philosophy in the Bhagavad Gita
In this philosophy module, we delve deeper into Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagavad Gita. Is Krishna’s philosophy truly universal? What does it mean to “go to war” on a personal or spiritual level? In this exploration, Zahir presents an alternative perspective on one of India’s most sacred texts, inviting us to view its messages through a contemporary lens.
Module 19 - The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are often dissected and discussed in yoga trainings, yet the depth of their relevance may only truly resonate after years of practice. Now, with so many years into our own physical journey, what do Patanjali’s sutras reveal to us? Is he speaking directly to you and me as he presents the Ashtanga system? And how relevant are these teachings in 2024? This module offers a profound and eye-opening examination of the sutras, re-evaluating their messages in the context of our modern lives.
Putting It All Together -
By the end of this course, you’ll have the confidence to bring together everything you’ve learned and see how it can support your ongoing growth as a yoga practitioner, a teacher, and as a person.
about us
Since 2013, we have taken immense pride in training yoga teachers. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of guiding people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, and all walks of life. Many have shared with us that completing our training was one of the best decisions they’ve ever made. And while not everyone goes on to teach, countless participants have found the experience transformative. They’ve discovered renewed faith in themselves, forged lifelong friendships, and rediscovered their unique path in life.
This course is about so much more than becoming a yoga teacher—it’s about discovering who you truly are. We are passionate about helping people on this journey of self-discovery, and that’s why we absolutely love what we do.

about the training
The course includes 200 in-person hours, primarily led by course leader Zahir Akram, with support from advanced yoga teachers Paul Allen and Laura Akram.
An additional 100 hours of homework is required to complete the full 300 learning hours. Details on how to log and fulfill these hours will be provided during our first weekend together. The homework consists of reflective learning exercises and short essays designed to consolidate your understanding. Additionally, all modules are supported by an online course featuring the same content, and reviewing this material will also count toward your 100 homework hours.
Manuals -
At the start of the course, you will receive three manuals, each aligned with the modules outlined in this syllabus.
Reading List -
There is no required pre-course reading list. However, students will greatly benefit from reading Zahir Akram's blogs, as they are specifically designed with teacher training in mind.
Prerequisites -
An advanced asana practice or current teaching experience is not necessary, but students should have at least two years of consistent yoga practice. This 300-hour course is advanced and covers a substantial amount of information. A solid foundational understanding of yoga and a regular practice will help keep the course running smoothly and prevent delays caused by a lack of basic knowledge.
more about the modules
PHYSIOLOGY - In yoga teacher training, there is often a heavy emphasis on anatomy. While this knowledge is valuable, studying anatomy without a foundational understanding of physiology is like learning only half the story. Physiology is what drives anatomy. Bones and muscles, without physiological processes, are lifeless ("shava"). It’s physiology—the intricate chemistry within the body—that animates them.
In this course, we explore basic principles of physiology through metaphors and analogies, allowing us to understand what’s happening at a cellular level and why breathing is EVERYTHING in yoga. As Iyengar would say, “Breath is the king of the mind.” Here, we’ll come to understand that concept organically and gain a deeper appreciation for the role of breath in practice.

partner yoga
One of my favourite modules to teach is Partner Yoga (that’s me on the top, in the picture on the right!). This module isn’t about mastering advanced poses; it’s about having fun, embracing the lighthearted side of yoga, and rediscovering that yoga should be enjoyable! Guided by myself and our partner-in-crime, Paul Allen, this session is all about building connections as we learn to work together. We learn to fall safely, laugh at ourselves, and find joy in the practice. A consistent favourite among our trainees, we love sharing yoga with a smile!"

philosophy
It’s been something of a personal mission for me to share the magic of the story of Shiva and Parvati, the first yogis, with anyone who’s willing to listen. This story isn’t about religion—it goes beyond that. It’s a timeless tale of love and faith, especially faith in oneself. I see their conversation as the ultimate self-help guide, stripped of religion, rules, and dogma. “If you are willing,” Shiva says. All that we seek, we will find within.
I love teaching this module, and as you may have seen from my blogs, this story holds a special place in my heart. I’m excited to carry on the tradition of sharing this profound and timeless wisdom with you.
