About
This Functional Anatomy course is fully accredited, and the hours you spend studying can count as Continued Professional Development (CPD) hours with Yoga Alliance UK. The course is flexible—it might take you 15 hours or 50, depending on how deeply you want to dive in. Homework is optional, so you can tailor the experience to suit your needs. This is not a medical anatomy course where you’re expected to memorize long lists of anatomical terms. Instead, the focus is on understanding how the body moves and what yoga teachers can do to encourage safe and effective movement. Learning anatomy for yoga should be about grasping the principles of movement, not simply learning names like "supraspinatus." Knowing the names of muscles is less useful than understanding how they work together. For example, when students ask, "Where should I feel this stretch?" you’re unlikely to answer with a technical term like "the semitendinosus." Instead, you might explain they could feel a pull at the back of the legs while the front of their hips work to create the movement. This course teaches you how to use relatable language that resonates with your students—most of whom are not anatomists. The goal is to make anatomy helpful and accessible, not overwhelming. I’ve spent most of my adult life studying the human body, and I believe yoga anatomy is often made more complicated than it needs to be. The key is to understand the principles of movement, and this course will make that clear as we progress. I, Zahir Akram, have won several awards for my teaching, including Best Yoga Teacher in Surrey and the OM Yoga Award for Teaching in 2024. These honors reflect my ability to simplify complex science and anatomy in a way that makes sense to my students. I hope you’ll join me on this journey. Let’s explore the fascinating world of functional anatomy together! Zahir Akram 🙏🏽
